Across the country, public safety agencies serving public and private colleges and universities are becoming much more consistent in the technologies they use and need. As more states adopt legislation to allow private campus safety departments to perform as police departments, access to secured information, including personal database access for criminal offender information, wanted persons and court actions will need solutions that are contemporary and demonstrate the same security measure that municipal and regional law enforcement adhere to. Likewise, campus police training and personnel records will be thrust into new data standards and records-retention categories that will need records management support that integrates but does not encroach upon other databases across the campus. Planning for these swift changes will require a growing fluency in state and federal laws and the distinct IT environments each of these information sources will need.
