In 2016 we at the University of Alabama at Birmingham were presented the challenge of ‘making life easier for everyone,’ including not only students and staff but also prospective students in order to increase our attractiveness. Our campus is very diverse and so we felt that improving the flow of relevant and useful information between everyone and the university was key to driving engagement. We already had a campus mobile solution deployed but the adoption rate was low. We analyzed the needs of different user groups and developed a multi-phased strategy so that we could go live in just six weeks to greet the new students. This presentation will review our mission and challenges and describe how we managed the tradeoff of user needs with time by delivering a personalized experience. We will also describe our rollout which we knew would be key to adoption. The presentation will go on to describe future plans including iBeacon-based attendance monitoring and other location-based services and deeper integration with campus-wide solutions.
