The UB Critical Trends Summit

Clarify your Mission, Build Campus Consensus, and Deliver ROI

Join 25 top leaders from America’s most influential colleges and universities for an all-day summit featuring thought-leadership presentations and interactive discussions on three compelling topics with direct relevance to your institution:

  • The ROI of Digital Learning
Managing digital resources has moved to the center of instructional strategy for all of K-20 education, but the unique pressures facing higher education leaders means they must do more than “go digital.” Our morning sessions will take a deep dive into issues related to access and utilization of digital resources. These essential elements of digital strategy are often overlooked, but are too often a barrier to growth.
  • New Thinking About General Education
With increasing pressure on colleges and universities to provide a “utility-oriented” curriculum, what is the future of gen-ed? This topic will be addressed in our luncheon keynote by James Muyskens, former president of CUNY Queens College and now a gen-ed instructor there. Earlier, Dr. Muyskens was Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the 34-campus University System of Georgia and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas.
  • Campus Climate: Moving from Contention to Consensus
Whether it’s “free speech,” Title IX, race relations, Greek life or governance, schools across the nation are being disrupted by contention. We’ll explore tactics for collaborative consensus-building, including an innovative approach that uses crowdsourcing technology.

This summit, created exclusively for VP level leaders and above, is limited to just 25 participants. We will have ample time for peer collaboration and networking, including dedicated break-out discussions on topics selected by you. And, a report on the summit will be published by University Business magazine.

There is no cost to attend the Critical Trends Summit on Monday, June 4th and participation in the summit provides a free, full conference pass to UBTech 2018.

Gen-ed courses have traditionally been the foundation of the college curriculum, providing a gateway for students of all backgrounds to pursue the major of their choice. But with increasing diversity of the student body and rising political pressure to make the curriculum more career-focused, the future of gen-ed is in question. Speaker: James Muyskens, former president of CUNY Queens College.

Peer-led Breakout Discussions (2:00 - 3:00 pm)

Topics will be pre-selected by attendees

Campus Climate: Moving from Contention to Consensus (3:30 - 5:00 pm)

Sponsored by Thoughtexchange - You don’t achieve consensus by attempting to change minds. Instead, you strive to get people to accept an outcome they may not like because they bought into the process as fair and reasonable. This highly interactive and participatory session will explore a new crowdsourcing approach to consensus-building that moves beyond open forums and surveys to help college and university leaders ensure that all stakeholders have a place at the table.

Hosted Networking Dinner with Thoughtexchange (7:00 pm)
